Bocas Species Database Distribution: This species has been reported from the Bermuda, the Bahamas, the West Indies and south to Brazil. Natural History Notes: This species is similar to another spider crab species called Mithrax caribbaeus. Characteristics: This large crab has a carapace of up to 10 cm long. At the edges of the carapace, we can distinguish 4 spines, the first one being slightly forked and the other being longer. A fifth spine can be seen on top of the carapace. The carapace is brownish red. The legs are covered with brown hair and have a red coloration with yellow bands. All the species of the genus Mithrax share certain characteristics such as: spoon-shaped claw tips, legs armed with spines and the carapace with two rostral horns and 3-4 lobes on the front margin. |
