Habitat: Moist tropical evergreen forests, seasonally dry forests, and disturbed areas. Generally occurs below 1000 m. Distribution: Mexico through Central America to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Also Jamaica, the Tres Marias Islands, and Trinidad. Natural History Notes: Guild 7: Highly Cluttered Space/Gleaning Nectarivores (Kalko, et al., 1996). Forms maternity colonies in caves, hollow trees, culverts, and houses. The diet includes pollen, nectar, fruits, and some insects. Females may bear young during any month of the year in most areas, but may be seasonally polyestric in Brazil. Characteristics: Small size. Forearm 33-38 mm, Mb 7-11 gms. Dorsal pelage dark brown, reddish brown, or gray brown, paler buffy brown ventrally. Fur bicolor, basal part whitish. Snout elongated, tongue long, extensible. Ears and noseleaf small, Tail short, about 1/3 length of naked tail membrane. Upper incisors form angular series, inner incisors much larger than outer.
