Habitat: This Trogon species favors habitats such as forest borders, lighter woodland and clearings with large trees, in the lowlands and foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from eastern Mexico to northern Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Violaceous Trogon is usually found alone or in pairs, and rarely deep in the forest. Its call consists of a series of soft notes like "cow" or "kyoo", that can be repeated up to 15 times. This bird feeds on insects and fruits. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 24.1 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a fairly long straight tail with a square shape at the tip. The male has a grayish bill and an orange-yellow ring around the eye. The plumage of the male is metallic green above, with the crown, the sides of the neck and the chest all violet-blue. Then, the sides of the head and the throat are black. The wing-coverts and the secondaries (line of wing feathers closest to the body) are black but with several white spots. We can distinguish a vague white band across the breast and the lower underparts are orange-yellow. Then, the underside of the tail shows fine black and white bars and the outer feathers show three white bands at their tip. The female looks similar but the part above is mostly gray, as well as on the throat and the chest. The lower underparts are like the male. Also, the female has a bill dark gray colored on the upper mandible and pale gray on the lower mandible, and a broken white ring around the eye. Then, the underside of the tail is black and the outer part of the outer feathers shows white bars and a white tip.
