Habitat: This species can be found along the coasts, riverbanks, lakes, and estuaries. Distribution: This species breeds in North America; winters from United States to Panama and in West Indies, rarely to Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas. Natural History Notes: The Belted Kingfisher sits perched above the water, staring down intently. It often hovers briefly before diving in. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 12 inches and 13 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The part above of the male is bluish-gray with a white collar and hindneck. We can also distinguish a shabby crest. The part below is usually white, but a blue-gray band crosses the chest and contrasts with the white plumage. The female has a similar coloration pattern but has an additional "rufous-colored" band crossing the chest and extending over the flanks. Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC).
