Habitat: On coral reefs, usually under 5 m in depth. Distribution: Caribbean wide. Natural History Notes: Aka species are known to bore into calcitic substrata, they are particularly harmfull because they will attack living coral and damage the skeleton as well as harm the polyps. Characteristics: Yellow tubes bearing oscula (1-6 cm high, 0.9-3 cm wide) coming out of dead coral, with or without tissue covered by inhalant papilla. Excavating sponges, bright yellow sometimes with reddish tinges externally, and lighter yellow internally Surface microhispid, and sinous. High quantities of mucus released when broken.
