Habitat: This species favors humid forests, forest borders and adjacent clearings. Distribution: Species reported from Costa Rica to western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: This species of hummingbird feeds at or below eye level, but can also feed on flowering trees. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 13.34 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). Its beak is straight 2.54 cm. The male has a brilliant green coloration on the above and the below parts. A violet spot can be distinguished on the center of the throat. The tail is fairly long, has a blue-black coloration and has an important fork shape. The female is also green on the above, but does not have a violet spot on the throat. The below part is white with several green spots, especially on the throat and the breast. The tail has the same shape than that of the male but the outer feathers are tipped white.
