Habitat: This species can be found in open grassy areas and marshes. Distribution: This species breeds in northen and central Eurasia and in North America; American birds will migrate south to Panama, rarely to Colombia and Venezuela. Natural History Notes: This species usually rests on the ground in tall grass. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 46 cm and 56 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has long, fine wings and a long tail. Both male and female have a characteristic white patch on the rump. The plumage of the adult male will be mostly pale gray with a white coloration on the breast and the belly. The part below the wing is white and the primaries are tipped black. On the other hand, the female plumage will be mostly dark brown on the above, including the face and the chest, and paler brown on the part below with darker colored stripes. The tail is gray-brown with several black stripes. and the part below the wings is stripped with gray-brown. Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC).
