Costus lima is characterized by red appendaged bracts and tubular flowers. It is usually found in wet habitats. The type locality is just east of Siquirres, about 32 km from this site so this should be nearly identical to the type. There are two varieties depending on the type and distribution of the hairs on the upper leaf surface. This is var. lima, based on the scabrous leaf surface as shown in the leaf photo here.
